25th Annual Product of the Year Awards
From the thousands of products introduced in 2000, the editors of Electronic Products have chosen the most outstanding. The selections are based on significant advances in technology or its application, a decided innovation in design, or a substantial gain in price-performance. As usual, picking winners was made difficult by the many impressive products announced during the year.
Here, then, are the 2000 award winners.
Compact 1/4-W supply provides first efficient standby power source
The year 2000 saw for the first time an efficient, low-cost compact low-wattage supply dedicated solely to the standby power requirements of appliances, process control equipment, timers, large switching power supplies, and other applications. The 1-in.3 1/4-W Bias power supply (see Electronic Products, Jan. 2000, p. 91) not only generates 250 mW of standby power for 3 to 15-Vdc functions, it does so at 50% efficiency.
By contrast, traditional standby power methods use the main power source. These techniques--which include a parasitic winding on the main transformer or a linear regulator connected to a bulk capacitor--are typically just 2% to 10% efficient, thus wasting a lot of energy.

Generating 1/4 W from a 1-in.3 package, the Bias supply was introduced as the industry's first low-cost standby power source.

Easily designed into many applications, the patented single-component supply replaces the 13 to 23 discrete components that typically comprise other standby power approaches. Operating from an 85 to 265-Vac input, the supply works on a single-pulse-per-line cycle and uses a line-synchronous switching technology that eliminates conducted EMI.
Other specifications include a line voltage regulation of ±2% and an operating temperature range of 0° to +70°C. The supply is fully potted and meets FCC Class B requirements. ($3 ea/prod qty--stock.)
